Design Director

Description: Position Summary: 
The Director of Design is responsible for leading the Sportswear Design team in creating industry-leading line that achieves the sales goals as the leader in the market.  Duties include running quarterly Design meetings that set the tone and direction for a given season.  The Director is accountable for seeing this tone/direction through from original concept to the final execution of the line, including not only guiding the cut-and-sew designers to achieve the intended direction, but also partnering with the Graphics Manager/Art Director to infuse the Direction in the Color Palette, Trims Package and all graphics.  The Design Director will work hand-in-hand with Product Development to streamline processes and procedures, ensuring that the final line not only reflects Design’s original concept, but also meets price margins set by Merchandising. The Director will be responsible for presenting the line to Merchandising, Sales and Senior Management for pre-set Design Review Meetings and relaying design feedback to their team.  Design Director must be capable of managing and motivating multiple team-members, including Assistants, Associates, Designers and Senior Designers.  They are responsible for orchestrating the entire Design process and ultimately are held accountable for the final look, quality and fit of the line each season.

Requirements: • College Degree in Apparel Design or related course of study.
• Minimum 7+ years experience, or equivalent knowledge and skill set
• Advanced knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop
• Advanced understanding of apparel design and garment construction
• Advanced knowledge in all aspects of fabric construction
• Advanced understanding of color and graphics
• Comprehensive experience traveling to factories for design development
• Comprehensive understanding of color and graphics
• Ability to hire, train and manage multiple team members across multiple categories
• Ability to be able to quickly and decisively make decisions that will impact the team and company as a whole.
• Ability to clearly present the line to Merchandising, Sales and Senior Management
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-changing environment
• Ability to partner with Product Development team
• Strong Time Management skills; the ability to manage work flow across multiple employees, seasons and categories, and to consistently meet deadlines
• Must possess strong leadership skills; the Director is the conductor of the Design team.
• Strong attention to detail
• Highly Organized
• Ability to work as a team player with a diverse group of people and personalities
• Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
• Advanced knowledge of designing into set price points; responsible for leading team members to hit margin goals
• Possesses the knowledge and capacity to work with product development to offer multiple solutions for achieving a desired look at a given price-point/margin
• Ability to partner with Director of Merchandising as the administrative leaders of the Design Team; responsible for Design logistics such as building and enforcing time lines, apportionment and enforcement of budgets, employee moral and productivity, etc
